Nueces County was historically Democratic in presidential elections. However, it has voted narrowly Republican in recent years. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first Republican candidate to win the county in 1956. Before that year, Nueces County had never voted for the national Democratic candidate except in the first presidential election, 1848 for Whig Zachary Taylor and in 1860 for Southern Democratic John C. Breckinridge. The only Republicans who have carried the county since Eisenhower's election were Richard Nixon in 1972, and Ronald Reagan in 1984. Bill Clinton is the only Democratic candidate to have won Nueces County. He did so in 1996.
