The Lubbock region is the world's largest cotton-growing area. It is dependent heavily on federal agricultural subsidies and irrigation water from the Ogallala Aquifer. The aquifer is rapidly being depleted at an unsustainable rate over the long term. Water conservation has seen significant progress. New technologies like low-energy precision irrigation have been developed in Lubbock. The new pipeline to Lake Alan Henry will supply water for up to 3.2 million US gallons per year.
Adolph R. Hanslik, who was 90 years old when he died in 2007, was known as the "dean" of the Lubbock cotton sector. He had worked tirelessly for decades to increase export trade. Hanslik was also the largest donor to Texas Tech University Medical Center. He also donated the capital campaign to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center for the construction of a new library and archives building in La Grange, Fayette County, his native Texas.
