During the American Revolutionary War, several battles took place in Bergen. Fort Lee was strategically located on the New Jersey Palisades bluffs, just opposite Fort Washington in Manhattan. The Battle of Fort Lee was part of a British plan in November 1776 to capture George Washington. It also served to crush the Continental Army's forces, which were split and located at Fort Lee and Hackensack. The Continental forces abandoned Fort Lee's defenses and left behind a lot of supplies. They then made a hasty retreat through Englewood and Teaneck and crossed the Hackensack River at New Bridge Landing. This was one of few places where the river could be crossed by a bridge. To delay the British attack on Washington's headquarters at Hackensack, they destroyed the bridge. George Washington fled Hackensack via Polifly Road to Newark the next day.
British forces pursued Washington, but Washington continued to retreat across New Jersey. This allowed American forces to escape capture, and then regroup for future victories against the British elsewhere in New Jersey that winter. British forces soon realized they couldn't spread their wings across New Jersey after the Battle of Princeton, in January 1777. Hackensack was retaken by local militia. As armies from both sides moved across the country, Bergen County witnessed skirmishes.
