More about Fresno County

Fresno County was created in 1856 out of parts of Mariposa and Merced counties. Fresno, Spanish for "ash tree", is the name given to Fresno County in recognition of the abundant Fraxinus dipetala shrubby local Ash that grows along the San Joaquin River. Fresno County was divided into two counties: Mono County in 1861, and Madera County in 18.93. After a flood devastated much of Millerton, the original county seat was located along the San Joaquin River. However, it was relocated to Fresno via the newly constructed Southern Pacific Railroad.

Fresno County can be found in the middle of California. The landscape was very poor and barren when the first settlers arrived. After years of digging irrigation systems, Fresno County was transformed into a flourishing agricultural society. Many vineyards and orchards were established. Visitors can now see the full bloom of all the orchards by taking the Fresno County Blossom Trail.
