About Richmond, Virginia

There was a "downtown boom", which saw the construction of over 700 buildings between 1963 and 1965. The merger of Richmond Professional Institute and the Medical College of Virginia resulted in the creation of Virginia Commonwealth University in 1968. The city's boundaries were expanded to 27 square miles on the south side in 1970. More than 47,000 Chesterfield County residents were found within the city's borders on January 1, 1970, after years of court cases where Chesterfield County opposed annexation. Still-sore tensions developed in 1996 amid controversy surrounding the addition of a statue of Arthur Ashe, an African American Richmond native and tennis player to Monument Avenue's series of statues commemorating Confederate generals. Ashe's bronze statue, which faced the opposite direction of the Confederate Generals, was completed after months of controversy. It was finished on July 10, 1996.
