Proponents have suggested merging Erie County and the City of Buffalo. This would reduce the bureaucracy, political subdivisions, and administrative complexity among the county's many towns, cities, and villages. It would create a consolidated city/county that is controlled by one government. This would effectively make Buffalo's borders and population the same as Erie County's. These plans have been controversial. There is some controversy about the effect of the city's existing debt on a regional government. There have been concerns that a regional government could dilute the representation of minorities in government.
Erie County was a strong supporter of Republican Party candidates before 1936. Only four Democratic Party candidates won the county in a presidential race: James Buchanan, George B. McClellan, Grover Cleveland, and Woodrow Wilson. Since 1936, the county has been overwhelmingly Democratic. Only two Republicans have carried the county in a presidential race: Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. Nixon is the most recent. Donald Trump's appeal to working-class whites as well as Ethnic-Catholic voters significantly increased the Republican vote share in 2016. Four years later in 2020, Joe Biden had won 267,270 votes from Erie County. This is more than Barack Obama's 2008 win.
