About the Oklahoma Legal System

Three federal district courts are located in Oklahoma: a state supreme, court of criminal appeals, court of civil appeals, and trial courts with limited and general jurisdiction.

Oklahoma's state court judges are selected through commission-selection, and in all other courts except for the district courts where they are elected in nonpartisan elections. The selection process at all levels is similar, with policies regarding interim vacancies, chief judges selection, and judicial qualifications.

Oklahoma has three federal district courts. These courts can hear appeals from state court courts. They also serve as the origination point for federal cases or lawsuits. The Oklahoma federal district courts are the Eastern District of Oklahoma and the Northern District of Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Supreme Court was established in 1907. It is the court of last recourse for civil cases. The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals handles criminal matters. There are nine judgeships at the supreme court.

Four of the five judges appointed to the court by Democratic governors were there as of September 2021. Five were appointed by Republican governors. The Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals, which is located in Oklahoma, serves as an intermediate appellate court, with the Oklahoma Supreme Court being the final court of appeals for civil cases. The Court of Civil Appeals is composed of 12 judges from four divisions. The Supreme Court can release opinions from civil appellate courts for publication. This gives these cases precedential status.

About Oklahoma

The subtropical humid climate of Oklahoma's central, southern, and eastern parts is heavily influenced by the Gulf of Mexico-bringing southerly winds. As you travel westward, the climate shifts gradually toward semi-arid zones in the Panhandle's high plains and other western areas. These areas are less often affected by the southern moisture. Temperatures and precipitation drop from east to west in accordance with the average annual temperature in the southeast, which is 62 degrees F, and has an average annual rainfall of over 40 inches and up to 56 inches respectively. However, the panhandle averages 58 degrees and experiences an annual rainfall below 17 in.

The driest season in Oklahoma is winter. The average monthly precipitation rises dramatically in spring to a peak level in May. This is the wettest month in most of Oklahoma, due to its frequent and often severe thunderstorm activity. Although June may still be wet, most years see a decrease in rainfall between June and July. The middle of summer is Oklahoma's secondary dry season. It has long periods of hot weather and only occasional thunderstorm activity. In the hottest summers, like those of 1954, 1980, 2011, and 2011, severe drought is common. These summers featured weeks of virtually no rain and highs well above 100 degrees F. The average precipitation increases again between September and mid-October, which is a secondary wetter period. It then decreases from late October to December.
