Lauderdale County was named after Col. James Lauderdale, who was born in Virginia around 1780. Lauderdale moved to West Tennessee in the early 19th century and became a major of General John Coffee's cavalry volunteer cavalry. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel and commanded a brigade of mounted riflemen under Andrew Jackson. Reliable historians say that Col. Lauderdale didn't die at the Battle of New Orleans. He was injured in the Battle of Talladega, and died the following day, December 23, 1814. This occurred seventeen days before Jackson's victory over the British at New Orleans. Many southern counties and towns were named after him, but it is believed that he never even set foot in Lauderdale County.
Lauderdale County was founded in 1818, one year before Alabama became a country. The county seat for Lauderdale County was also established in 1818. Under the name Cypress Land Company, group investors purchased 5,515 acres from the government. This land included the original site of the town. Because of their close proximity to the river, there were other towns in Lauderdale County that were interested in early settlers. These included Savage's Spring nine miles below Florence and Waterloo 20 miles downstream.
Center Star is one of the oldest settlements in the county, and it's located between Killen & Rogersville. The Chickasaws and Cherokees once claimed this area, which required a cession from each tribe to establish the settlement. One time, you could see the remains of an Indian village southwest of Center Star. Middleton, Elgin, and Elgin were also old settlements. Elgin was first known as Ingram's Elgin Cross Roads.
Rogersville is located 23 miles east of Florence and was named after John Rogers, an Indian trader whose sons were close friends with the great Sam Houston. This family is believed to have produced Will Rogers, the late president of the United States. Lamb's Ferry, near Rogersville, was an early ferry that ran for many years.
Lexington, Springfield, Anderson, and Anderson are located to the north by the Lee Highway. The town of Lexington is a part of the Cherokee territory. Many of those who settled in that area were from Tennessee and the Carolinas. In 1880, the first Lexington post office was established on Loretto Road. At that time, mail was transported by horseback or carts from Loretto in Tennessee.
St. Florian, a town located on the Jackson Highway was founded in 1872 and named after its German Catholic founders as their patron saint.
The county was home to four Alabama governors: Hugh McVay, Edward A. O'Neal, Emmett O'Neal, and Robert M. Patton.
