Butte County's earliest residents were the Northwestern Maidu, who arrived in Butte County around 1500 B.C. and settled on Mooretown Ridge between South Fork and Middle Fork of Feather River. Their descendants are today's Concow Maidu tribe.
In the late 1700s and early 1800s, people started to travel westward. Many Spanish, Mexican, and early American explorers traveled to the region then owned by Mexico, now covered by California. Numerous settlers were granted large areas of land by the Mexican government in the 1840s. Llano Seco, located in Butte County is one of the few remaining intact land grants from that period.
The discovery of gold in California, in 1848, brought thousands to the region and Butte county, including John Bidwell, who was the eventual founder of Chico. The Feather River was the birthplace of towns like Oroville, Cherokee, and Magalia.
California was established in 1850 by the migration of thousands of people during the Gold Rush. Butte County was one of the original 27 counties.
