About Romney, West Virginia
Romney, the county seat of Hampshire County, is one of West Virginia’s oldest towns, founded in 1762. It is nestled in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains and offers visitors a rich glimpse into early American frontier life. Romney’s historic charm is evident in its preserved architecture, including the Hampshire County Courthouse and several antebellum homes.
Romney is perhaps best known for its role in the Civil War, as the town changed hands between Union and Confederate forces over 50 times. The Romney Classical Institute, a school for boys established in 1846, was used as a hospital by both armies during the war. The town is home to the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, which opened in 1870 and remains a key institution in the area.
One of Romney’s most famous residents was Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, the Confederate general, who taught at the nearby Virginia Military Institute before the Civil War. Though not born in Romney, Jackson’s influence in the region during the war left a lasting legacy, and his military tactics are studied to this day.
