Burlingame was built on land that William Davis Merry Howard, a San Francisco-based merchant, had previously owned. Howard was a prolific eucalyptus tree grower and retired to the property. Howard died in 1856. The land was then sold to William C. Ralston (a prominent banker). Ralston named the land in 1868 after Anson Burlingame (the United States Ambassador to China). Many lots in Burlingame were purchased by people who wanted to build new homes after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The town of Burlingame was incorporated in 1908. The neighboring community of Easton was annexed in 1910. This area is now called the Easton Addition neighborhood.
Burlingame is known as the City of Trees because of its 18,000+ public trees. The Burlingame board passed 1908 an ordinance that prohibited the cutting, injuring, or destruction of trees. There are many parks in the city, as well as eucalyptus and eucalyptus trees.
A new bust of Anson Burlingame was unveiled in 2018 at an international ceremony at Burlingame Public Library. It was sculpted in China by Zhou Limin.
