Batesville, Arkansas' second-oldest municipality (after Georgetown) is also the oldest city. It is named after James Woodson Bates who was the first Arkansas territorial delegate to the Congress of the United States. It has been called Poke Bayou and Napoleon.
Batesville, Arkansas was an important port along the White River in the early days. It also served as an entry point into the northern Arkansas interior. Batesville was the central land office in northern Arkansas and played an important role in the settlement of the Ozark Mountains.
In 1810, the first settlement in the Batesville region was found near the mouth of Polk Bayou. By 1819, the town had a ferry crossing the White River and about 12 houses. In early 1821, the town was partly laid out. On March 3, 1822, a bill was executed and recorded. The town's plat was then laid out. In 1821, Batesville was made the county seat. In January 1822 Judge Richard Searcy established the first state circuit court in Batesville. In 1822, the town's first post office was opened. It became home to a county court in 1830. Shortly after Arkansas became a state, Governor Conway established Batesville Academy. The area around the city used to have large quarries of manganese, phosphate, limestone, and marble.
Batesville was home to the Northeast Arkansas League's minor league baseball team, the Batesville Pilots. In 1941, the team was disbanded.
