About Irving, Texas

J.O. Irving founded Irving in 1903. J.O. Schulze and Otis Brown founded Irving in 1903. Netta Barcus Brown was fondly aware that Washington Irving, a literary author, was a favorite. Irving became the name of the town. Irving was originally founded in 1889 in an area known as Gorbit. In 1894, the name was changed to Kit. Otis Brown was the first mayor to incorporate Irving on April 14, 1914.

The Irving area was home to two cotton gins and two churches in the late nineteenth century. There was also a blacksmith shop, a general store, and several other businesses. In 1909, the Irving district's public school system was established by Kit and Lively schools. Although population growth was slow and often halting in 1925 with 357 residents, a substantial increase in population occurred in the 1930s.

The city was home to approximately 45,000 people in the 1960s. Irving was home to many manufacturing facilities, as well as financial, transportation, and retail businesses. Texas Stadium, the Dallas Cowboys' home field, was built in 1971. The University of Dallas in Irving opened its doors in 1956. The Chateau Theater was opened as part of a network of drive-in and premium dollar theaters in North Texas and Oklahoma.
