About the Idaho Legal System

There is one federal court in Idaho. A state supreme court and a state court. Trial courts have both limited and general jurisdiction. They serve different purposes.

The United States District Court for the District of Idaho is the federal district court for Idaho.

The Idaho Supreme Court was established in 1890 and includes five judgeships.

Established in 1980, the Idaho Court of Appeals is an intermediate appellate court. The court is responsible for hearing cases that have been assigned by the Idaho Supreme Court. Capital murder convictions and appeals from the Public Utilities Commission and Industrial Commission are excluded. Appellants can petition the Idaho Supreme Court for review of a decision of the Idaho Court of Appeals, but such a petition is not mandatory.

The Idaho District Courts hear civil and criminal cases. They also hear appeals from decisions of magistrate courts. They can also hear domestic relations cases and post-conviction relief proceedings where an inmate challenges their conviction or imprisonment.

About Idaho

Idaho has been home to native peoples for thousands of years. This was even before European colonization. Idaho was part of the Oregon Country in the early 19th century. This area of contention between the U.S. Empire and Britain was still there. The Oregon Treaty of 1846 officially made it a U.S. territory. However, a separate Idaho Territory wasn't created until 1863. Instead, it was included for periods in Washington Territory and Oregon Territory. On July 3, 1890, Idaho was admitted to the Union and became the 43rd state.
