About Dane County, Wisconsin

Dane County, like most counties that are anchored by a large urban population center and an important public university, is solidly Democratic. It has a long history of being a part of the progressive movement. They have supported the Democratic presidential nominee in every election from 1960 to 1988, including the Republican landslide wins of 1982, 1980, 1984, and 1988. Six times, Republicans have crossed the 35% threshold. Only Menominee, a predominantly Native American county, is more reliably Democratic.

The county is not less Democratic at the state level. In 1994, Treasurer Jack Voight and Governor Tommy Thompson were the last Republicans that the county supported at the state level. Alexander Wiley, a Republican senator from the county, won the election in 1956 by less than one percent. Ten years prior, the county had not voted for Senator Joseph McCarthy. The county supported Progressive Party candidates during the three-party era from the 1930s-1940s. These included the Orland Steen Loois, Herman Ekern, and the La Follette brothers.
