About Marion County, West Virginia
Marion County, located in north-central West Virginia, is known for its industrial history, particularly in coal mining and steel production. The county is home to Fairmont, its largest city, which became a center for coal mining in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Monongahela River flows through the county, offering scenic views and outdoor recreation opportunities.
Marion County is significant in American labor history, as it was the site of the deadly Monongah Mine disaster in 1907, which claimed the lives of 362 miners and remains the worst mining disaster in U.S. history. The tragedy led to major reforms in mine safety laws and is commemorated each year with events that honor those who lost their lives. The county's mining heritage is still evident in the region's culture and economy.
Famous people from Marion County include Francis H. Pierpont, known as the "Father of West Virginia," for his role in the creation of the state during the Civil War. He served as governor of the Restored Government of Virginia and later as a senator. The county is also the birthplace of Mary Lou Retton, the first American woman to win a gold medal in gymnastics at the Olympics.
