Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836 and established the Republic of Texas. He proposed that the republic's capital move to a location on the north bank Colorado River after visiting central Texas as Vice President Mirabeau B. Lamar during a buffalo-hunting expedition in 1837-1838. The site was named Waterloo, Texas in 1839. Shortly thereafter, Austin was given its new name. The following year, a new county was established, with Austin as its seat. It was later named Travis County after William B. Travis. Despite the fact that the Republic's capital was briefly moved to Houston during the Texas Archive War events, Austin was once again the capital. It was also the capital of Texas, which was later annexed to the United States by the United States in 1845.
