About Anson, Texas

Anson, Jones County's County Seat, is a small town with deep roots in Texas cowboy culture. Named for Anson Jones - last President of Texas Republic - Anson is best known as hosting the Texas Cowboy Reunion every Fourth of July; one of the oldest and largest gatherings of working cowboys in America! At this event, cowboy traditions such as rodeos, chuck wagon cooking, and Western dances are honored, making Anson an essential component of its identity.

Anson is home to the historic Anson Opera House, built during the late 19th century. As an integral cultural space in Anson and West Texas in general, it serves as a hub of activity and hosts performances, social gatherings and political rallies - serving as a symbol of Anson's rich cultural history and role within West Texas itself.

Dorothy Scarborough was one of Anson's most notable residents and an award-winning author, best known for penning the novel "The Wind", set against the stark plains of West Texas. Though born in Mount Carmel, Texas, Scarborough managed to capture its essence and the struggles faced by early settlers through her writing. "The Wind" would later become an adaptation into a silent film further cementing Scarborough's connection to Anson and West Texas culture history.
