Jim Wells County in South Texas was established in 1911 and named for James B. Wells, an influential Texas politician and judge. This region of South Texas is well known for its agricultural production - cotton and cattle have long been cornerstones of its economy since it began. Jim Wells County's history includes one of Texas's most infamous political scandals - Alice 1950 Box 13 scandal. This infamous political event involved voter fraud during the 1948 Texas Democratic primary election which ultimately led to Lyndon B. Johnson winning his Senate seat and becoming president. This event remains one of Texas history's most iconic scandals and remains closely associated with Jim Wells County today.
