Due to felony charges against Mayor Barry in relation to the misuse of public funds, she resigned on March 6, 2018. A special election was called. The Davidson County Election Commission called a special election. This was in accordance with the Tennessee Supreme Court's ruling. David Briley was Vice Mayor under Barry and Acting Mayor following her resignation. He won the special election with just more than 54% of the vote. He is now the 70th mayor of Nashville.
