Although the number of rubber workers declined by half between 2000 and 2007, Akron's polymer research gained international recognition. The Polymer Valley, which now includes 400 companies involved in polymers, of which 94 are located in Akron itself, is the center of the University of Akron. The University of Akron is the center of research. It is home to the Goodyear Polymer Center and National Polymer Innovation Center as well as the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. Newsweek ranked Akron fifth among the ten most innovative high-tech hubs in 2001 because of its contribution to the Information Age. The seal was updated with "City of Invention" in 2008 when the All-America City Award received its third time. The city was used as a venue for some events at the 2014 Gay Games. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company established a new global headquarters in Innovation Way in 2013. This further strengthened its relationship with the city.
The effects of soil and air pollution from the city's industrial past are still being addressed by the city. The city's southwest corner was affected by soil contamination and toxic PCB-laden fumes.
