Summit County is a county located in Ohio, the United States. The county seat of the county is Akron. The county was created from parts of Medina and Portage Counties on March 3, 1840. Summit County was named because it is home to the highest elevation of the Ohio and Erie Canals.
Summit County is, like Cuyahoga County in Ohio, one of only two Ohio 88 counties with a charter government. This is authorized by Article X, Ohio Constitution. Summit County's charter has an elected County Executive and an eleven-member County Council. This is in addition to the three elected commissioners. The eight members of the council come from each district, while the three remaining are elected at large. Summit County has an appointed Medical Examiner, rather than an elected Coroner. An elected Fiscal Officer also exercises the powers of an auditor, treasurer, and recorder and is elected to the council. The rest of the officials are identical to those in other counties.
