About Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati, a rivertown at the crossroads of the North, South, and East, developed fewer immigrants and received less European influence than East Coast cities during the same period. It did however receive a large number of German-speaking immigrants who helped to found many of its cultural institutions. With the transition from steamboats and railroads that used freight shipping to transport goods, trade patterns changed drastically by the end of the 19th century. Cincinnati's growth was also slowing. Chicago and St. Louis were able to surpass Cincinnati in terms of population, especially since they had developed on the basis of strong commodity exploitation, economics, and railroads. St. Louis was the gateway to westward migration for many decades after the Civil War.

Three major sports teams are located in Cincinnati: The Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball, the Cincinnati Bengals, and FC Cincinnati of Major League Soccer. It also hosts the Cincinnati Cyclones minor league ice hockey club. The University of Cincinnati is the largest university in Cincinnati. It was established in 1819 as a municipal college. Today, it is ranked among the top 50 in the United States. Many structures found in Cincinnati's urban core have remained unchanged for over 200 years. Cincinnati was known as "Paris of America" in the late 1800s due to ambitious architectural projects such as the Music Hall, Cincinnatian Hotel, and Shillito department store. Cincinnati is where William Howard Taft was born, the 27th President of the United States and former Chief Justice.
