About Hamilton County, Ohio

Hamilton County was established in 1790 by Arthur St. Clair (governor of the Northwest Territory), as the second county of the Northwest Territory. Cincinnati was chosen as the seat. The county was named in honor of Alexander Hamilton who was the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. He also founded the Federalist Party. The original boundaries of the county were established by the Symmes purchase contract, in 1788. They included the Ohio River in the South, the Great Miami River west, the Lesser Miami River north, and the Cuyahoga River north. Its original area was one-eighth Ohio and contained approximately 2,000 people (not counting the remaining Native Americans). In 1792, the county was expanded to include what is now the lower peninsula of Michigan. Hamilton was the birthplace of several counties, which has reduced its size to its current size.
