About Winston-Salem, North Carolina

In 2003, the Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point metropolitan statistical area was redefined by the OMB and separated into the two major metropolitan areas of Winston-Salem and Greensboro-High Point. In 2020, the population of Winston-Salem was 679 948. The metro area spans more than 2,000 miles and includes five counties: Yadkin, Davidson Stokes, Stokes, Davie, and Stokes.

Winston-Salem has been called "The Twin City" because of its dual heritage. "The Camel City" refers to the city’s historical involvement in the tobacco industry, specifically R.J. Reynolds' Camel cigarettes. In informal conversation, many residents of Winston-Salem and North Carolina refer to the city as "Winston". Six colleges and institutions are located in Winston-Salem, including Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. These schools rank among the top art schools in America. The city was ranked No. 46 of the 150 cities ranked on U.S. News & World Report's "Best Places to Live” list were included.
