About Jefferson County, Kentucky

George Rogers Clark's militia, 60 civilian settlers, and his militia established the first American settlement on Corn Island, Ohio River, in 1778 during the American Revolutionary War. The following year, they moved to the mainland and established Louisville.

Richard Mentor Johnson was the 9th Vice President of the United States. He was born in Jefferson County, in 1780. His family lived in a settlement near Beargrass Creek.
The Chenoweth Massacre of July 1789 was the last major American Indian raid in Jefferson County.
