About Medicine Lodge, Kansas

Medicine Lodge, Kansas' smallest city located in south-central Kansas, is famed for both its natural beauty and rich history. Nestled beneath the Gypsum Hills and boasting rolling hills and prairie grasslands as its backdrop, Medicine Lodge attracts nature enthusiasts from near and far alike. Furthermore, being on the Medicine River's tributary of Salt Fork Arkansas River creates opportunities for fishing, boating and hiking activities within city limits.

One fascinating fact about Medicine Lodge is that it was the site of the "Peace Treaty of 1867," signed between the U.S. government and several southern Plains Indian tribes to end years of conflict between settlers and Native Americans in the area. Visitors today can discover this historic event at the Medicine Lodge Indian Peace Treaty Museum which showcases exhibits related to this historic event as well as Plains Indian culture.

Medicine Lodge has long been home to some illustrious people. One such individual was temperance advocate Carry Nation. Nation lived and ran a hotel there during her protests against alcohol consumption. Congressman Keith Sebelius represented Kansas' 1st congressional district for 12 years during the 1980s and 90s from Medicine Lodge; Joe Tinker played with Chicago Cubs prior to being inducted into Hall of Fame baseball player Joe Tinker was born there as well.

Medicine Lodge has seen several noteworthy events over the years. One notable landmark was the 1874 "Medicine Lodge Stockade," built by U.S. army troops to protect surveyors and railroad workers from attacks from Native Americans; later used by them as temporary jail for Natives captured by them; today visitors can see this landmark site and learn its story at Medicine Lodge Stockade Museum.
