About Atchison County, Kansas

Atchison County lies in northeast Kansas along the Missouri River and is well known for its picturesque landscapes, rich history and welcoming communities. Atchison is its county seat and features many historical sites, museums and other attractions within its city limits.

Atchison County is notable as being home to Amelia Earhart, one of the greatest aviation pioneers and women's rights activists of our era. Born here in 1897 and growing up there before beginning her legendary aviation career. Additionally, Cyrus K. Holliday founded Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway - becoming an influential figure throughout Kansas history and widely seen as being among the greatest figures to come out of Atchison County history.

Over the years, Atchison County has played host to some iconic events, most notably the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas Debates held between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas that helped form public opinion about slavery and state sovereignty issues - these debates became one of the key moments in American political history.
