About Wayne County, Iowa

Wayne County is a rural county located in south-central Iowa. It is situated in the southern part of the state and borders the state of Missouri. The county is home to several state parks, including the Red Haw State Park, which offers a variety of outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping. The county seat is the city of Corydon, which is located near the center of the county. The city has a rich history and was established in 1851, making it one of the oldest settlements in the area.

One interesting fact about Wayne County is that it was named after General Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero known for his victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Another notable historical event that took place in Wayne County was the Civil War Battle of Corydon. Although the county was not directly involved in the conflict, the Battle of Corydon was fought just a few miles away in neighboring Harrison County. The battle was the only major engagement of the Civil War to take place in Iowa.

Several famous people have lived in Wayne County throughout its history. One of the most notable is Iowa Governor George W. Clarke, who was born in the city of Weldon in 1852. Clarke served as governor from 1913 to 1917 and was known for his progressive policies, including his support for women's suffrage. Another notable figure from Wayne County is actor Eddie Quillan, who was born in Philadelphia but spent much of his childhood in the city of Bedford. Quillan appeared in over 200 films during his career, including the classic 1933 film "Duck Soup" starring the Marx Brothers.
