Chariton is a small city located in south-central Iowa, in Lucas County. The city is situated along the Chariton River and is approximately 35 miles south of Des Moines. Chariton is known for its historic downtown area, which features several well-preserved buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city is also home to several parks and natural areas, including the nearby Red Haw State Park.
One interesting fact about Chariton is that it was home to the first successful American school for students with intellectual disabilities. The school, which was founded by Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe in 1848, was known as the Iowa Asylum for Idiots and was later renamed the Glenwood Resource Center. Today, the center continues to provide services for individuals with intellectual disabilities and is a major employer in the area.
Several famous people have called Chariton home over the years, including George Gallup, the founder of the Gallup Poll. Gallup was born in Jefferson, Iowa, but grew up in Chariton and attended high school there. Another notable resident was Bob Feller, a Hall of Fame pitcher for the Cleveland Indians who was known for his powerful fastball. Feller was born in nearby Van Meter but spent much of his childhood in Chariton and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
In terms of famous events, Chariton was the site of the first recorded train robbery in the United States. The robbery, which took place in 1873, was carried out by the notorious James-Younger Gang, who were known for their daring raids on trains and banks throughout the Midwest. The gang made off with over $3,000 in cash and other valuables, but several members were later captured and brought to justice. Today, visitors to Chariton can learn more about this historic event by visiting the Lucas County Historical Museum, which has a collection of artifacts related to the robbery and the James-Younger Gang.
