About Fort Madison, Iowa

Fort Madison is a city located in the southeastern part of Iowa, situated along the Mississippi River. It is the southernmost point in Iowa and is located just across the river from Nauvoo, Illinois. The city was established in 1808 as a military post, named after James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. Today, Fort Madison is a bustling community with a vibrant downtown area and many historical sites and attractions.

One of the most interesting facts about Fort Madison is its connection to the Santa Fe Trail. In the 1800s, the city was a major hub for trade and transportation, and many travelers passed through on their way westward. The Santa Fe Trail was a 900-mile long trade route that connected Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Fort Madison was an important stop along the way, and many merchants and traders set up shops and businesses here.

Several famous people have ties to Fort Madison, including William P. Rogers, who served as U.S. Attorney General under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Another notable figure is Charles Aldrich, a historian and author who wrote extensively about the early history of Iowa. Fort Madison is also the birthplace of William F. Cody, better known as Buffalo Bill. Cody was a famous frontiersman, hunter, and showman who helped create the myth of the American West. He was born in a log cabin just outside Fort Madison in 1846.

Over the years, Fort Madison has been the site of many important events and milestones. One of the most significant was the construction of the Santa Fe Swing Span Bridge in 1887, which allowed trains to cross the Mississippi River for the first time. The city has also been the site of numerous floods and natural disasters, including a devastating tornado in 2008 that destroyed many homes and businesses. Despite these challenges, Fort Madison has remained a resilient and vibrant community that celebrates its rich history and culture.
