Audubon is a small city situated in the southwestern corner of Iowa, in Audubon County. It's known for its stunning parks and natural areas as well as its rich agricultural heritage. Audubon can be reached easily due to its proximity to several major highways that connect it to travelers from throughout the region.
Audubon is home to the Audubon County Historical Museum, which showcases local and regional history. Exhibits cover Native American culture, early settlers' lives and agricultural development within Audubon. Furthermore, visitors can view artifacts from the 1993 Great Flood which had an immense effect on the region.
Over the years, several notable people have had connections to Audubon County. One of the most renowned was James Arthur Ray, a self-help author and motivational speaker born in Jamestown, Iowa who spent much of his childhood there. Ray achieved national prominence during the early 2000s but saw it curtailed by an Arizona sweat lodge scandal which claimed three of his followers' lives. Another noteworthy resident is Gordon W. Allport - a psychologist and professor who grew up in Audubon before becoming one of psychology's most influential psychologists of 20th century.
One iconic event that occurred in Audubon was the Great Flood of 1993, which caused widespread devastation and destruction throughout much of the Midwest. This flood was caused by heavy rainfall, snowmelt, and ice jams; it necessitated evacuations of thousands of residents in Iowa and other states. Unfortunately, many homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed during this disaster; however, Audubon worked hard to rebuild and today remains a vibrant community with an exciting history and culture.
