Posey County is home to several significant archaeological sites, such as Angel Mounds State Historic Site. These provide invaluable insights into the lives and cultures of indigenous peoples living in the area before European settlers arrived. Furthermore, Posey County boasts several historic landmarks and buildings from utopian era towns like Old New Harmony State Historic Site - which features restored buildings from its utopian era.
Posey County has produced many famous figures throughout its history. One of the most renowned is Robert Indiana, an American artist best known for his iconic "LOVE" sculpture. Born in New Castle, Indiana, Indiana spent much of his childhood years in Newburgh - a small town within Posey County - while James Bethel Gresham - born here and buried here - was another memorable figure from Posey County: James Bethel Gresham was the first American casualty of World War I who became known by those living within its boundaries (though buried at Evansville).
Posey County was witness to one of history's most pivotal battles: Corydon. In July 1863, Confederate forces led by General John Hunt Morgan invaded southern Indiana and engaged Union troops in a fierce skirmish near Corydon - then part of Harrison County - before ultimately triumphing. To this day, it is remembered as Indiana's sole significant Civil War engagement.
