Kentland is renowned for being the site of one of America's worst train wrecks, when a Michigan Central train collided with an empty coal train near town in 1918, killing 86 people and injuring more than 120 others. This accident remains one of the worst accidents in American history to this day. Another memorable event that took place in Kentland during 1936 Centennial Celebration marked its 100th anniversary - complete with parade, historical pageant, and other activities drawing thousands to the area.
Over the years, Kentland has been home to some illustrious residents. These included astronaut Virgil I.
