Wayne County, Illinois, is a rural county located 120 miles southeast of St. Louis. It primarily consists of agricultural land with corn and soybeans as the two most widely grown crops. There are several small towns such as Fairfield (the county seat) and Wayne City (renowned for its annual Fall Festival). Surrounding Wayne County is numerous state parks and recreation areas like Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park and Rend Lake which provide opportunities for hiking, boating, and fishing enthusiasts alike.
One intriguing fact about Wayne County is its history as the site of Illinois' first coal mine. Opened in Harrisburg in 1810 and operated with slave labor, this coal mining operation left behind several large operations which have since closed down. Another significant event in county life occurred with the founding of the Wayne County Historical Society in 1975 - dedicated to preserving local histories through the preservation of historic sites and the publication of local history books.
Over the years, Wayne County has produced many famous individuals. One of the most renowned is Billie Burke, best known for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz. Although born in Washington D.C., Burke spent much of her childhood there where her father owned a ranch. Another well-known local resident is composer and musician David Fanshawe born in Paoli who attended Fairfield High School before making a name for himself with world music recordings featuring African tribal music.
