The Kumeyaay were the first to settle in Encinitas. Gaspar de Portola was the governor of Baja California. He visited the region in 1769 as part of the Portola expedition. There he met residents of the Kumeyaay village Jeyal or Heyal near the San Elijo Lagoon. Portola gave the valley of Los Encinos its name for the oak forest that runs along El Camino Real. There was also an area known as Hakutl in New Encinitas.
Mexican Independence was achieved when the land was given to Andres Yarra in 1842 for the construction of Rancho Las Encinitas. This rancho is located in what is now Olivenhain, New Encinitas. Encinitas, a Spanish name that means "little oaks", is the Spanish name.
Jabez Pitcher created Old Encinitas in 1881.
In 1986, 69.3% of voters from the communities of historical Encinitas and New Encinitas voted to incorporate the city. These communities still retain their distinctive flavors and identities.
