Polk County was home to country singer T. Texas Tyler, along with "Tuffy" Goff. Father Augustine Patrick Gallagher was a Subiaco Academy graduate and St. Vincent's College student from Missouri. He arrived in Mena on October 16, 1897, to serve St. Agnes Catholic Church. He was the priest who served the longest time in any single parish in America, serving his parish from October 16, 1897, until his death on July 14, 1950. Garland "Bevo" Beavers, who was born in Mena in March 1906, went on to play football at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He also served as the quarterback for the Memphis Tigers. Dorothy Shaver, a graduate of Mena High School, was the first woman to lead a multimillion-dollar corporation in the United States. She became the head of Lord & Taylor, in 1946. Mary Victory Mayfield, a Mena-born physician, practiced medicine in the early 20th century. However, Mayfield's birth as a girl earned her national attention. Jack Darr, a local writer, joined Radio Electronics Magazine's staff in 1960s Mena. He wrote two monthly columns and published twenty books. Polk County also saw Bob Dorough, a jazz pianist.
