Its history can be traced back to Helena, AR, a port town on the Mississippi River that was founded in 1833. This port became a major port soon after steamboats started traveling the river in 1811. Helena, AR was the center of Arkansas's agricultural wealth. It was here that Deep South culture made its strongest penetration into Arkansas.
Helena, Arkansas, was pinched between Crowley's Ridge to the west and the river to the east. This made it impossible for the region to absorb the industrialization that had begun to occur in the early 20th Century. In 1909, West Helena, AR, was established to the west of Crowley's Ridge, around the factories and other mills that Helena had lost. Helena-West Helena was formed when the various cities were merged into one. Helena-West Helena will be referred to throughout this website as Helena.
