Prescott is the county seat in Nevada County, southwest Arkansas. It is also the biggest city in the county. It was originally a railroad town. Today, it is a vital link along the land route between Little Rock, Arkansas, and Texarkana.
The land now known as Nevada County is part of the West Gulf Coastal Plain. It was sparsely populated before and after the Louisiana Purchase. Caddo Indians inhabited the area, while some European settlers settled along the rivers. However, the land now known as Prescott was left untouched, with only a few cotton plantations being introduced to the region in the first half of the nineteenth century. Camden and Washington were connected by a major transportation corridor. The route ran several miles south of Prescott and was part of the Indian Removal route. It also served as an important route for transporting goods and people from Washington to the Ouachita River. A Civil War skirmish took place near Prescott at Prairie d'Ane, on April 10 and 11, 1864. It was part of the Camden Expedition. Other than that, the area was not remarkable until the Cairo and Fulton Railroad started building their line from Little Rock, Texas, to Texarkana.
