Following the Federal forces' July 1862 occupation of Helena, many military actions were held in Lee County during the Civil War. The largest military action near the city was probably Captain Marland L.Perkins of the Ninth Illinois Cavalry with the Third, Fourth, and Iowa cavalries marching from Moro, Marianna to meet Confederate resistance, including 500 mounted troops at La Grange. The Union forces defeated the Confederate charge and killed approximately fifty soldiers.
Marianna was placed under martial law in 1868 by Governor Powell Clayton as a result of terrorist acts by the Ku Klux Klan. Lee County was established by the state legislature under the patronage of William Hines Furbush (African-American state representative). Marianna has then named the county seat. The first brick store was built in 1874 and the first Marianna Index newspaper was published. The rival Lee County Courier was established a few years later. The city established a strict quarantine in 1879 during a yellow fever epidemic. Fortunately, they were able to escape without major damage. The first kerosene lamps were placed along the streets two years later. In addition, the Helena and Iron Mountain Railroad linked Marianna to Helena and Forrest City. Marianna Male and Female Academy, which was founded in 1884, lasted until 1905 when it burned down.
