The county seat for Lafayette County is Lewisville. It was established around the time Arkansas became an independent state. However, it was relocated half a century later by the construction of railroads. Lafayette County was formed from land that the Caddo claimed until 1835 when they were moved west to northern Mexico and Indian Territory.
The newly opened land was quickly settled by European settlers. Lewis Barnes Fort, one of the European-born Settlers, purchased land on July 6, 1836, on the spot where Lewisville would be built. According to records, Fort and his family emigrated from Virginia to Arkansas. Lewisville was named after Fort, the settlement's first name. It was established in 1850.
Since then, the City of Lewisville was a second-class municipality. The current population is approximately 1280. Our school includes Buckner, Falcon Lewisville, Stamps, and the surrounding areas. It extends as far east as Garland, an adjacent Miller County.
