More about Paragould, Arkansas

Paragould was the scene of a series of attacks by Whites on Black residents between 1888 and 1908. Some Black residents were flogged and their homes and churches burned. Arkansas Governor Jeff Davis directed the state militia to refrain from intervening on behalf of Black residents. White residents repeatedly ordered Black citizens to flee and they never returned. They threatened to kill them if they didn't leave the county in 1908. This led to a nearly complete exodus of African-Americans from the county and earned Paragould the title of a sundown community. Until 1948, black children were forbidden from participating in public education. They then bused them to Booker T. Washington High School. Jonesboro ended this practice in 1957 when it was faced with mandatory integration. Before 1982, Paragould had no hotels that allowed Blacks to stay the night. Two Black Union Pacific workers tried to go to a restaurant in 1983 but were stopped by police. The workers were accused of trying to enter the restaurant. Paragould was said to have had an informal ban on African-Americans being hired until 2002.
