More about Rison, Arkansas

Rison was created by Texas and St. Louis Railroad. Originally, the county seat of Dorsey was at Toledo. Rison was not a place name when the railroad passed through the county in 1882. Samuel Wesley Fordyce, a Huntsville, Alabama former Union army officer was given the authority to determine the railroad's route from Texarkana, Missouri to Birds Point. Legend has it that when Toledo's leading citizens refused to allow him to route the railroad through their community, Fordyce planned a route three-mile north through the land that would become Rison.

Samuel W. Fordyce gave the community its name in honor of William Richard Rison. Rison was his ex-partner in a bank venture in Alabama and had served on the opposing side of Civil War. James McMurtrey, a farmer and lawyer, built the first home in Rison in 1880. The Southwest Improvement Association, a subsidiary railroad company, offered a parcel of land to the residents of Rison in 1883. J. T. Renfrow was elected mayor of Rison in 1890. In 1885, the name of the county was changed to Cleveland from Dorsey. This was due to the increasing popularity of the U.S. In 1885, Senator Stephen Dorsey's popularity had declined and the name of President Grover Cleveland was changed. After a fierce battle between the three leading contenders, Toledo Kingsland and Rison, the state Supreme Court moved Toledo's county seat to Rison in 1891.
