The land was home to the Quapaw tribe, an indigenous tribe that settled in South Arkansas from the east when settlers arrived. In 1818, the first cession of territory took place. A later boundary was drawn against the Choctaw tribe nearby in 1820. This opened up the Arkansas Territory's southeast corner for settlement. The area was settled by European-Americans for about thirty years. However, the city itself wasn't incorporated until 1851. Legend has it that the city's name is after Captain Hugh Bradley who was the founder of the first settlement party and the freed slave. Isaac Pennington, who was a key member of Bradley's company, donated the original plat.
