Gentry was originally a rural Ozark farming community called Orchard City. It was located in western Benton County and is known for its apple orchards, as well as other produce. When the Kansas City Southern Railroad passed through the town, the town started to grow. Residents of the community petitioned county officials to incorporate the town in 1894. The city was then renamed Gentry after the official responsible for the construction of the railroad.
Gentry was a big fan of the railroad, which saw it grow to 1,000 people by 1903.
In 1926-1927, the railroad company built a new Gentry depot. It was regarded as one of the most beautiful depots along the railway line. The grand opening was celebrated with a banquet and railway officials were on board a special train to mark the occasion. From 1964 to 1964, Gentry was home to four to six passenger trains per week.
Highway 59, which runs through the city from north to south, was constructed in 1937. It is still the main highway that runs through Gentry, connecting Gentry to other west Benton County towns.
1946 saw the City Council vote to purchase a water tank from the War Assets Corporation of Kentucky for $1,650. 1948 saw a special election in which bonds were issued to finance the installation of larger water mains and fireplugs. The city bought its own water company in the 1950s. Gentry began expanding water lines to rural areas around the community at the beginning of the 21st century.
