Jasper is the county seat in Walker County, Alabama, United States. Jasper is named in honor of Sergeant William Jasper who was an American Revolutionary War hero. It was established around 1815 and became incorporated on August 18, 1886.
In 1886, the first significant development of the region was achieved through Jasper when the Kansas City Memphis and Birmingham Railroad and Sheffield & Birmingham Railroad were built. From 200 people in 1886 to over 3,000 in 1890, the population grew to almost 3,000. The Mountain Eagle published a special edition of 1891 that stated that there were six coal mines, two sandstone quarries, and 400 coke ovens. It also listed one foundry and machine shop, one sawmill, one brickwork, four hotels, and two banks.
