More about Walker County, Alabama

Walker County was formed from parts of Marion and Tuscaloosa Counties on December 26, 1823. It was named for Senator John Walker, the Alabama senator who represented Alabama from 1819-1822. On February 12, 1850, the county's northern half was incorporated into the county of Winston. This greatly reduced its size. Jasper is the county seat. It was named after William Jasper from South Carolina, who was a Revolutionary War hero.

Walker County is home to several historic sites that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Bankhead House and Boshell's Mill as well as the First United Methodist Church of Jasper and the Gilchrist House. The Jasper Downtown Historic District is also included. The Stephenson House is also included.
