Ashville was originally established as St. Clairsville. However, the name was changed in honor of John Ash, who was the first white settler to the area in 1817. He was the first county judge, and then a state senator. In the center of the city, you can still see his log cabin. The land that is now the city center was originally owned by Philip Coleman. However, he sold 30 acres of the land to the five county commissioners. Ash was also appointed by the governor. Thomas Bibb was appointed to create a new county seat in St. Clair. It was established as the county seat in 1821. The village was incorporated in 1822. Two years later, the first courthouse was also built from logs. In 1844, it was replaced by the current courthouse.
A group of investors formed the Tennessee River Ashville and Coosa Railroad Company in 1890. They planned to build a railroad from Sheffield via Ashville to Anniston via Ashville. It was able to connect Whitney to Ashville via the Alabama Great Southern Railroad. It went bankrupt in the middle of the 1890s and the tracks were demolished and sold for scrap.
In 1891, electric lights were introduced to Ashville. The first telephone company was also chartered that year. The southern half of the county residents complained about the difficulty in traveling to Ashville via Backbone Mountain. In response, the state legislature established a satellite county seat in Pell City, located on the southern side.
