Some claim that the Battle of Columbus was the final battle of the Civil War. It took place in Phenix City on April 16, 1865. Confederate resistance met Union General James Wilson as he crossed over the Chattahoochee to try and destroy Columbus' military industry, Georgia.
The original Phenix City was two towns that were bordered on the North and South. Girard was on the south, in Russell County. Brownville was on the north, which was completely within Lee County. The post office insists on calling it "Lively" because Brownville, a Tuscaloosa County community, already claimed it. The nearby railroad depot was named Knight's Station to add confusion. It was listed as both Brownville because Brownville residents preferred it. The legislature officially incorporated it on February 23, 1883.
