The colony of British West Florida was in charge of the land that now makes up Pike County between 1763-1783. The new United States of America took over the area after 1783. The State of Alabama was admitted into the Union in 1819. It was quickly organized into counties. Pike County, named after General Zebulon Pike of New Jersey and founded on December 17, 1821, was one of the oldest counties in Alabama. Andrew Townsend was the temporary county seat. Pike County was a large area of land, so it was named the State of Pike. It included a portion of what is now Crenshaw Montgomery, Macon, and Bullock counties and extended to the Chattahoochie river on the east.
